Tax Season Is Not Over…Yet!

Usually this is the time of year that I write my “Tax Season Is Over” article. For many CPAs, you still treated 4/15 as the tax deadline. Unfortunately, with many of our clients being affected by the COVID 19 pandemic, there are still several more months until the actual deadline is upon us.

In the wake of our busy season being extended, combined with the need to understand our client’s full financial picture more than ever, all while working from home, our usual challenges have most likely been exacerbated, with a few more thrown in for good measure.

Here are the top 3 topics that I have heard CPA firms referring to the most in the wake of our “new normal”…

  1. Connectivity. Whether it is through Zoom, Google Teams, Skype or FaceTime, we all feel the need to see our clients, our peers and our staff. Yes, we can never fully replace a face-to-face meeting and in the back of our minds we are thinking “If I have one more Zoom meeting….!” However I will go out on a limb and say that we are all glad that we have this technology. Working from home would be much lonelier and not as productive if we had to rely solely on emails and phone calls. So have some fun with it – mix up your background images or host a team happy hour. For many of us we have at least another month of this, so may as well do what we can to own it and make it yours!
  2. Time Management. Most of us are used to waking up, getting dressed, commuting to work, getting our work done, commuting home. With the ability to work at anytime it is easy to work in to the wee hours of the night or, in the case of parents who’s kids are taking part in distance learning, to work sporadically throughout the day. Regardless of what your “work hours” currently are, the most important thing that you need to remember is that it is more important that you put in quality work and meet all of your deadlines, then sit at a computer screen waiting for an email to pop up! Take this opportunity to figure out how much of the day you actually did work vs the amount of the day you procrastinated the work that needed to get done….you may be surprised to find out that you can get more done in less time than when you were in the office, freeing up your schedule to tackle the projects on your to-do list that you never thought you would.
  3. Workflow. Business process management is key right now! With everyone scattered, it is more important than ever to make sure that your staff can easily and consistently track what work needs to be done, when and by whom. Our clients are going through enough right now, so hitting deadlines and knowing exactly where your firm is within a specific engagement is paramount! The last thing you want to do when a client calls is scramble for the correct information. If you’re finding that your business process management solution is leaving everyone a bit more in the dark than you thought, Amelio may be your answer.

Wishing everyone well!
